You have the idea. How are you going to do it?
A venture concept, an academic advisor with federal grant experience, and one sentence of feedback that reframed the whole project. This is the work that turns an idea into something a reviewer can actually assess.
1. A problem the founder had lived
The concept came out of several years spent arranging care for an elderly parent. Information about elder care providers is scattered, inconsistent, unreviewed and largely invisible — the opposite of nearly every other consumer category, where a searchable, reviewed, comparable directory has existed for two decades.
The venture was a structured, proprietary database of elder care information presented the way consumers already expect to find things.
2. The advisor’s question, and why it is the right one

Where funding applications actually fail
The advisor - a university faculty member with prior experience preparing federal small-business research grant applications - reduced the reviewer's objection to a single sentence.
Federal research funding does not reward good ideas. It rewards specific outcomes with measurable targets inside a defined timeframe, tied to a stated purpose. Most applications describe a problem vividly and then become vague at exactly the point a reviewer starts reading carefully. The work below exists to prevent that.
3. Turning it into something a reviewer can assess

The project management apparatus
Produced in an advised setting rather than in a vacuum, which is why it follows a formal methodology rather than an invented one.
| Artifact | What it forces you to answer |
|---|---|
| Product scope and work breakdown | What exactly is being built, decomposed until each piece can be estimated |
| Work packages | Who does each piece, how long it takes, what it costs |
| Gantt and dependencies | What has to happen before what, and where the schedule is actually fragile |
| Risk register | What could go wrong, how likely, how bad, and what the response is |
| Monitoring and control plan | How anyone would know whether it is working once money is committed |
The funding analysis identified opportunities under two separate federal programs with different guidelines — one topic-driven, one open-ended — along with the phase structure, the funding levels, and the fact that this class of funding is non-dilutive. That last point changes the calculus for a founder considering whether to raise privately at all.
4. What this case is meant to show
| The usual approach | What was done here |
|---|---|
| Write the application around the idea | Build the plan first, then write the application from it |
| Describe the problem vividly | Describe the problem, then answer “how” in numbers |
| One funding route | Two, with the differences between them understood |
| Show it to people who like it | Show it to an advisor whose job is to find the hole |
Any funding application, grant, board paper or investment case faces the same sentence: you have the idea, how are you going to do it. Scope, schedule, cost, risk and control is the answer, and it is the same answer whether the reader is a federal reviewer, a bank, a board or a partner.

Have an idea that needs to survive a reviewer?
We build the scope, the schedule, the cost model and the risk register — the parts that answer “how” — and we put them in front of the objections before the reviewer does.
